Again a long pending writeup. Finally got a chance to put this up. As a part of  the Bengaluru Habba held every year, several events are held – classical carnatic/hindustani music, rock/jazz concerts by upcoming as well as popular artists, dance programs etc. I happened to attend one of these dance events –  A Classical Treat – Bharatanatyam by Priyadarsini Govind and Padmasri and Padma Bhushan Dr. Padma Subramaniam. A Cultural Program held at Chowdiah Memorial Hall, Bangalore. More details about Bengaluru Habba at  http://bengaluruhabba.co.in/

Now for some photographs from the event…..

Again, folks at XDA Developers, Hats off! There is a joke going on, XDA developers cook ROMs faster than the Samsung or any other vendors can release phones :D – It’s almost true.

A gingerbread crumb was found ( read – a leaked ROM was obtained from Samsung) and it was ported to SGS4G. Updated only a while ago. I had reported some bugs on the forum. Let’s see how many of them are fixed from this leak!

Some screenshots….

Update: The bluetooth crash has been fixed.

And a couple of issues in the current ROM:

1.  Connect a regular headset to SGS4G phone and the inbuilt microphone gets disabled, the other party can’t hear you talking at all. Ideally, the phone microphone should be enabled if it detects a regular 3.5mm stereo jack. And it should disable the microphone only when it detects the handsfree. It should be able to do this. Froyo didn’t have this problem. This is an injected defect in Gingerbread.

2. More to come – will report here.

As I have mentioned earlier in my three part write-up on the Everest Base Camp Trek (Do read it here : Part I, Part II and Part III) , it was made possible by Childreach India International – A charity providing community. There was an event in Bangalore to hand over the cheque to the Hyderabad based NGO called CHERISH. I was asked to make a small presentation about our experiences during the trek. Here it is, the presentation made it to their website. Here is the link to the website about the same. Please do read, each one of us can make a difference!

After I laid my hands on the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X wide angle earlier in the year, this was one of the first few photo-shoots I went on. I always wanted to capture the Bangalore heritage (now Bengaluru) and this came as a perfect opportunity. The buildings, the culture and the history. Though, I could not achieve all of what I had in my mind, I think it turned out pretty decent. And, this post itself is coming after a long, very long time as I was held up with other things and this somehow took low priority(ashamed of it :( ).  Me and my brother, Sandeep went around the Cubbon Park, the Vidhana Soudha and other landmark structures around central Bangalore. I hope to cover the rest of Bengaluru sometime in the near future! Here is a brief about the same shown through my lens, the new Tokina.

Cubbon Park – It is one of the oldest parks in Bengaluru, established in 1870 by the British during the British Era in India.  It was originally named “Meade’s Park” after the British officer who was serving the then Mysore State.  In 1927, the park was renamed “Sri. Chamarajendra Park” in memory of  the ruler of Mysore State who goes by the same name, during whose rule the park came into existence. (More about the park on Wikipedia).

Sheshadri Memorial Hall – City Central Library –  Built in the honor of the  then Dewan of Mysore  - Sir K.Seshadri Iyer. This structure is a classic European architecture as can be seen below. This houses the Seshadri Memorial Library – The Bangalore City Central Library.(More on the same here on Wikipedia).

Vidhana Soudha –  It is the hot seat, the seat of the Government of the Karnataka State. Constructed in 1956, it is a stone building with an impressive architecture. So much so, that a replica is being built in the vicinity and will be used as an additional administrative block. Kengal Hanumanthaiah, a famous personality of yester Bangalore, was a key figure who ensured timely completion of this historic building after the conception of  idea of House of Legislature (earlier name) by the then cabinet.(More on this here on Wikipedia).

High Court of Karnataka -  Known traditionally as the “Attara Kacheri’, It is in front of Vidhana Soudha. The high court of Karnataka State operates out of this impressive red building. It was built in 1868. There is an interesting history to this building. This building was supposed to be demolished, but was saved only by an PIL filed. In 1984, a judgement was passed which prevented this building from being demolished. The judgement was issued in the very building.

Minsk Square - Not much history is known about this place, but it is believed that this was created to honor an unknown soldier from one of those numerous wars. Readers – If you know more about the place, please leave a comment about the same!.

Thanks to XDADevelopers, Android devices see a new version of OS every now and then with lot of tweaks, improvements, enhancements etc…Recently, two or three days ago,  a leaked Gingerbread 2.3.3 ROM with root was posted on the forum. For the geeks out there here are the exact details,

Gingerbread ROM 2.3.3

Firmware version: 2.3.3

Baseband Version: T959VUVKF1

Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-T959VUVKF1-CL270364

Build number: GINGERBREAD.VUVKF1

There are several visible tweaks I could see, though all very minor. The animations sure looks zappier – smooth n very fluid! The GPS icons have changed, the Battery level indicators have changed. The gmail notification icon in the notification bar has changed. As I remarked earlier, all very small. I am yet to see major differences with respect to the call handling module, Note/Memo taking while on a call etc.. – where it really needs some tweaking!

Google released the Gtalk app on android platforms with video chat option. This has been ported for the SGS4G. As of now, officially  it is only available for the Google Nexus S platform. That worked quite nicely though there are things to be ironed out. The video from both ends are visible on the SGS4G, but looks like the video is not being transported from the instrument to the other end. It is yet to be sorted out.

Call log has an issue – It is recording the missed calls as of now and the calls made/received are not logged at all. This is a major bug!

Battery life – people have claimed that they got a substantial increase in the battery life, I am yet  to see that. I will have the data in another day or two..

Bluetooth notification –  Try to turn on the bluetooth from the notification area and the system bar process force closes on you. It is only when you turn ON bluetooth. However you can turn off bluetooth without any crash. This is something that needs to be fixed.

All in all, there are lot of things which are still open-ended that needs attention. I hope the android developers are listening out there.
